Our assembly capabilities are equipped to meet your requirements.
Many OEMs have decided their core competence is not assembly of minor components. Therefore, Davis Machine built a team capable of combining in-house manufactured goods with sourced items to deliver install-ready assemblies.
Our team is continually growing its capability and complementary support tooling in this area. Familiarity with the basics of riveting, press-fit and shrink-fit bushing installation, bearing staking, nutplate and bracket bonding plus associated sealing, touch up activities and more is high. Comfort with taking on assemblies of increasing complication either by quantity (supply chain critical) or by design (assembly process critical) is something we work through transparently with each customer and project.
An aerospace partner, not just a supplier
During Davis’ first component assembly requiring nut plate install and coating application for fluid exposure we found the “recommended” process and procedure time-consuming and unattractive. In essence the application of the sealants (referred to internally and generically as “pookie”) was tedious, frustrating to the employee and unsightly when compliant (downright ugly when noncompliant). The customer had clear dissatisfaction with market support as the order for these components came with a laminated posterboard showing various failures of application rejected after delivery.
The Davis team demands repeatability in process and takes pride in the aesthetic of what we produce; we were not going to settle for “that is just how it is.” A cross functional team from the fittings and assembly and engineering teams worked for a week through potential improvements to the process. The final solution required precision application forms in volume to be manufactured by the fittings division and designed to accommodate dimensional tolerance of hardware by engineering; however, the end result is a smooth, clean-edge and 1/20th application time “Hershey’s kiss” shaped application system (see images above).
We aim to satisfy our customer with every interaction, and the team was ecstatic with the outcome of this exercise. We are proud that it is easy to walk the assembly line of this end product and easily identify a Davis product compared with any other.
What can our Aerospace Assemblies team do for you?
Generally, our assembly capabilities are assessed and confirmed or developed as part of an assembled component quote package. Our preference is to understand the requirements of the output and preferably to gain full review and approval of our assembly process as part of or prior to first article production.
We are equally happy to play a role as assembly support only where other vendors may not have the capability or desire to enter this space. Our experienced team has capabilities that go well beyond the basics of assembly. We look forward to the opportunity to support your assembly needs as part of a manufacturing process internally or as a matter of combining other vendors’ components.
