In 2018 Davis Machine entered the Aerospace Structural Components market. Our team has been assembled from around the region based on expertise in the unique engineering, manufacturing and quality requirements of mid to large format structural components. Our team and equipment are capable of quickly processing new product through first article and into delivery.
Our structures division standard components are titanium or aluminum “hog outs” with a strong track record of success in casting conversion, thin wall monolithic components and assembly heavy components. Our team is familiar in working with model based, print based and even hard tool defined components on development and inspection.
An Aerospace Partner, not just a supplier
A Davis structures customer needed a part that had historically been manufactured as a casting. The casting supplier was unable to support this customer and a quality representative shared this dilemma with Davis leadership. There was a statement that it was impossible or at least improbable that it could be traditional subtractive machined from billet due to dimensional requirements . Little did they know that saying it can’t be done is not something Davis easily accepts.
The Davis engineering team reviewed the component and decided they would like to take on the implicit challenge. Davis procured material, specialized tooling, completed full manufacture and inspection of this component at our own cost. Upon completion of the first article the full inspection showed minor edits to our programming required and a Not For Flight but otherwise compliant component was provided on to the customer engineering team who had not yet started the redesign. Davis machines this component now under contract with this customer and provides manufacturability feedback free of charge to this valued customer on an ongoing basis to this day.
What can our Aerospace Structural Components team do for you?
A general description, being very simple about it, of the parts that really excite our Structural Components division is as follows:
- It is not larger than 10’ X 7’ with a reasonable height and is made of metal
- It is mill heavy and it appears to require 5-axis equipment to manufacture
- It has a rigorous appearance as well as dimensional requirement
- It is not something you would give to “any shop” to support
- You are not willing to sacrifice on quality
Certainly with our equipment we can deviate from the above; however, our preference is to commit to what we can deliver and then prove it. We find that many customers like to have us “prove it” with more difficult components or very quick turn high quality requirement work and we expand our relationship from there based on trust and experience.
